Cold Season, Part III

And the bug rolls on...  Poor Ewan!  He got hit with the sick bug this morning.  He came down with a raging fever while I was at JoAnn's looking for some fabric to finish some projects.  Luckily I had some Tylenol in my purse.  I knew it wasn't go to be enough when he started moaning in the shopping cart.  Time to double up on the Ibuprofen, too.  He has the same thing that Zane had last week.
We have been sick off and on the entire month of January, cycling through two different colds.  It's been…….fun.
I've washed bedding, duvet covers, doorknobs, remotes, iPods, LeapPads, light switches.  You name it and it has been sanitized.  Today I am grateful for a day of mild 50 degree weather.  I've opened all the windows to air out our house.  Here's to fresh air to make the sickness be carried away with the wind.

Cold Season, Part II

Cold season, part II. Zane has missed a couple days from school as we suffer from a major cold. Poor kid!

This cold has run the gamut.  Abric started with it first, then Ewan.  I started with it last week with Zane.  He was feeling better for a couple days, and then a fever set in.  I just haven't been able to get any sleep.  I think between coughing and having to pee, I sleep for maybe one hour stretches at a time.  Not to mention kids coming into our room in the middle of the night to tell us that they can't breathe.  Zane, Harrison, and Andy have all taken turns sleeping on the futon couch in the baby's room.
It's been real.
Hopefully we are all on the mend now!

Cold Season

"Abric begged me at 11:00AM to carry him to bed. You know a 3 year old is sick when they ask for a nap! Zane is home sick today. Looks like the cold and flu season has officially hit our household. And thank goodness it is just colds and not the flu!"

Poison Ivy

We went camping last weekend and let the boys play in the woods.  We found out that Ewan is extremely allergic to poison ivy.
None of the other boys really got it.  First, it looked like mosquito bites.  Then it looked like mosquito bites on steroids.  Which is exactly what the doctor put him on to speed up the healing process.

Abric just wanted to join in the photo shoot with his cheeser-cheeser.

What are you doing New Year's Eve?

This year, we actually did have really fun plans for New Year's Eve. But what do you do when an uninvited guest shows up? Zane and Ewan picked up a stomach bug (I'm thinking it was the gym because A and I, their cousins, had the same exact bug, just an hour before the boys.)
We had our own little barf-fest Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Let's just say that my washing machine was working overtime and Andy and I got very little sleep. You can see me passed out in the top left corner of this photo.
Zane is passed out on the cuddlebag. Ewan, for some reason, decided to cocoon himself in between the cuddlebag and the couch. He is sitting up straight. We don't know if he went down there to play and didn't have the energy to pull himself out so he fell asleep instead? It is a mystery. Poor little things.
By late evening of New Year's Eve, they seemed to be doing much better. It looks like the uninvited guest decided to leave.

Taking Charge

With Harrison being the oldest, he definitely has that "take charge" kind of personality. Since I have been taking care of a sick little baby (poor Abric), I have been slacking on my motherly duties, like making food and cleaning the house. At 5 o'clock Harrison decided that he would make something for his brothers to eat. Normally I would have protested, but at the rate I was going, dinner was going to be a couple hours away, so I let him cook away.
He made a lovely snack of cinnamon sugar toast, crackers, crackers, and more crackers.
Would you like some bread with your butter?

Girls Night?

(Connor, Hayden, Harrison, Ewan, and Zane.)

Andy and his friends, Mike and Shawn, left Friday night to go volunteer for the North Face Endurance Challenge--a 50-mile trail run. They were helping at the aid station at the half-way point, mile 25. They said it was pretty intense, pretty bloody, and pretty exciting. Andy said he felt humbled to change the runner's sweaty socks, to help them with their wounds, and to feed them hot chicken broth and Mountain Dew. (yes, Mountain Dew, for a speedy sugar fix. I know. We were surprised.)
Anyway, enough about that! Friday evening my friends (Mike and Shawn's wives) Angie and Christine came over. Christine ended up going home, since she lives around the corner and Jacob wasn't feeling very well. But Angie and her two boys and baby spent the night. The boys had a slumber party: Harrison, Zane, Hayden, and Connor had fun. Little Serena was an angel and slept all through the night, even with the loud boys!
Ewan and Connor are about 10 months apart. They played really well. Except for the normal love-hate relationship that toddlers have with each other depending on who has what toy, they did really well.
The older boys stayed busy (and out of our hair) by playing Legos. Amazingly, they played really well and there weren't any major fights. Ang and I have noticed that the older the boys get, the better they play with each other. We were actually about to scrapbook for a couple hours. We haven't done that in almost a year.
As for my sweet, little Zane. The doctor did say that it would get worse before it got better. Every time I looked at his face, or saw him scratching his itches, I just wanted to hold him and cry. I think he got a little tired of my "hovering" because he did tell me a couple times to, "Stop, Mom!" I couldn't help trying to give him a hug every time I walked by him. He really has been a trooper with this allergic reaction. (I must say that Sunday was probably the worst day of all. He got them all over his underwear-area. . .how do you say it politely?. . . and all over his feet. We must have changed his underwear and pants 4 different times before church. He couldn't even put shoes on. I took him to sacrament, where he fell asleep. When he woke up, I just ended up taking him home. He was miserable.)
One thing I love about my friend Ang is that she is an amazing cook. She served a mission in Italy and she makes great food. She made dinner for all of us on Saturday night.
This is her recipe for a baked eggplant. I really need to get the recipe. She baked the eggplant slices, and then topped them with spinach, tomatoes, and some cheese and herb mixture, then baked it some more. It was so tasty!
Also, Ang stayed home with 4 of the kids while I took Harrison to his soccer game. Hayden came to support him. Here is an action shot of him scoring a goal after a breakaway.
It was such a nice weekend!!! It was definitely the break that I needed, especially after dealing with being sick myself and with sick kids. The guys ended up getting home later on Saturday night. It was nice to hear about their experience. Now, they are talking about training for an ultra-marathon. (What?!!??!)

A Freaked Out Mom

It all began yesterday when Zane had complained of a tummy ache. I just figured, since he hadn't eaten much, that he was hungry. Dinner was almost ready and we needed to hurry and eat in order to make it to Harrison's soccer practice by 6. We ate dinner, got in the van, and drove to soccer. While we were there, Zane lifted his arms up to stretch and I saw these large, welt-like bumps all over his belly. I lifted up his shirt some more. They were all over his chest, stomache, and back. I arranged for Harrison to get a ride home with Brennan and his dad, Ryan (our neighbors). Ryan said it looked like hives because Brennan had some last week. I rode out to the doctor's office and just missed them.
When I got home, I called our other neighbor, the Cooper's, because Shawn is in medical school and I figured he could verify if it was hives. I had never seen hives be so big before, especially the bump underneath Zane's bellybutton. They were hives. By that point, the on-call doctor had called me back. She suggested Benadryl and to watch if his throat swells up, etc. I was trying to stay calm, but my mind just kept going over what Zane had eaten all day. It was normal food that he had eaten before without a reaction: Cheerios and milk, grapes, blueberry muffins, a bite of pb & j, grilled asparagus, cannellini bean burgers, pasta, and some pomegranate juice (we are all getting over colds). Shortly after I got home, Sarah showed up with the girls. Andy and Michael were getting drywall for a kitchen we are in the process of remodeling. Sarah stayed with the kids while I ran to the store for some children's Benedryl. I gave him his first dose around 8pm. He seemed to be doing all right. He was a little itchy with an occasional burst of stomache pains. After Michael and Sarah left, we put the boys in the shower quick and they went to bed around 9pm. At 1am Zane woke up crying. Andy and I ran to get him. He was itchy and miserable. We gave him another dose of Benadryl and put him in the bath again. After we got him out and put his jammies back on, he was still miserable. Andy gave him a blessing and Zane fell asleep in my arms midway through. (Talk about an answer to prayers!) I kept Zane in bed with me, so Andy decided to go to the couch. Zane started thrashing around 5am, so I instantly jumped out of bed and gave him another dose, thinking at this rate that he was going to overdose or something.
We all slept in until 8am. It had been a rough night. We hurried and got Harrison ready for school. I checked Zane over and the hives had gotten worse! They were completely covering his belly and back, they were going down his legs and up his neck. They were even on his face. He was definitely having an allergic reaction and I was going crazy trying to figure out what it was! Andy took Harrison to school and left for work. I called the doctor this morning at 9am and, thankfully, they were able to get him in at 9:30. All the nurses felt sorry for him when they saw his belly and back. The doctor came in, checked Zane out, and said that he knew exactly what the problem was: Zane was having a reaction to his anti-biotic and was allergice to penicillin. I was SO relieved to finally have an answer! It is so hard for me, as a mom, to see one of my babies suffering. I had wondered about the anti-biotic, but he had been on it for 8 days, so I figured it wasn't causing the reaction. The doctor said that a person could take amoxicillin 100 times, and then one day, their body will just decide to react to it.
So here is my sweet little Zaner-Baner with a swollen face. When he isn't lying down, he kind of reminds me of Will Smith on Hitched. The doctor said it would take a couple weeks for the hives to all clear up, so he prescribed prednizone to help speed up the process. He said to continue with the Benadryl and to give Zane oatmeal baths to help relieve the itching. Poor little Zane. My heart just aches for him because I know he is miserable. I'm just so glad that we were able to find out what was causing this reaction.

Ohhhhhhhhhh Croup!

My poor baby, Ewan. You can just see it in his eyes that he doesn't feel well. At least he is eating now, seeing the blue-stained lips from the blueberry pancakes I made for breakfast.
He started to not feel well on Tuesday. He was so clingy and had started to do the barking-cough thing. Zane had had it while we were in Arizona, so poor Cindy had to deal with 1 sick kid. Zane seems to be doing much better now, he is just super ornery and has a runny nose. :D
Anyway, Tuesday was a rough day and I wasn't able to get much done except unpack and do some minor cleaning. By the evening, I was dying for a break, so Andy was nice enough to stay home from Young Men's so that I could go to book club: a much-needed mommy break!
Ewan seemed much better Wednesday. He wasn't barking anymore, he just had the runny nose like Zane. He was playing. He was eating well. Then around 4pm, he just crawled into my arms and wouldn't move. He was burning up. I took his temp and it was 103. Yikes! I gave him some ibuprofen and some tylenol, per doctor's orders. His fever went away and he asked for snacks and some juice. I gave him a big sippy cup of pedialyte and he downed the whole thing.
Last night, he woke up in the middle of the night and he was soaked from sweat. I thought that his fever had finally broken on its own and that we were through with this. He spent the rest of the night in our bed with me holding him.
He seemed much better this morning, until around 9:30, his fever started again. It was 101. I gave him some more tylenol and he went down for a good, long 3 hour nap. I called the doctor during this time and he said that croup was going around rampant in our area. It is viral, so not much you can do except treat symptoms and wait the 7-10 days for them to get better. Sigh..... so much for my social life. :D My poor baby, Ewan.
