Cub Scout Camp

Here are the boys getting ready for Cub Scout Day camp.  One week during the summer, Harrison and Zane were gone from 7:30am until 5:00pm.  They came home exhausted.  It was great!  The theme this year was C.S.I. - Cub Scout Investigation.

Blue and Gold Banquet

Last night was the Blue and Gold Banquet for Cub Scouts. We were excited to be able to meet more people from our new ward. They had each table decorated for each family, complete with name cards and a picture of our scout.

Zane was sneaking the chocolate candies, with a very sly face, I might add.
Abric has the 'cheeser cheeser' smile down pat. (His eyes disappear when he smiles, just like my dad's.)
Harrison received his Bobcat award. Since this was a first for me, too, I didn't know that I was supposed to receive a 'Mother's Pin'. We need to practice the whole how-to-pin-something-onto-a-shirt thing. We were both a little nervous. (I think his scout leader was a little nervous herself.)

Apparently one cub scout was in the middle of a very important phone call.

Blue and Gold Banquet

Harrison got invited to the Blue and Gold Banquet. It is an introductory meeting/dinner to Cub Scouts for all those boys turning 8 this year. He was supposed to make and decorate a patriotic-themed cake. He first asked to make a volcano cake. (See his birthday post.) We compromised and made Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima.
He mixed up the cake, with Zane's careful supervision. I helped him pour it into the Spiderman pan. (See this birthday post.) When the cake was cooled, we cut the hand off and stacked it on top of the cake for the mountain. We made a chocolate peanut-butter icing. (In the land of PA, everything has peanut butter.) But the icing was pretty good, if I don't say so myself!
I spread the icing on, then Harrison placed his army soldiers, the U.S. flag, and the sign he made. He mixed some green food coloring with coconut flakes for the foliage.
When we showed up at the banquet, the song, "One of these things is not like the other" from Sesame Street popped into my head. 95% of the cakes were the cool whip with the strawberry and blueberry flag. But its OK to be different, right? It was a fun night and I loved watching Harrison's excitement for the scouting program. I guess I better get ready for this ride, because I'm going to have scouting coming out of my ears with four boys!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Buttercream Frosting

1/2 cup (one stick) butter
1/2 cup butter flavored shortening
1/4 cup peanut butter
2-2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 t. vanilla
2-4 T milk

Cream butter, shortening, and pb together. Slowly add powdered sugar. Add vanilla. Add milk as needed to make fluffy.
